Instruction and Training for Enhanced Reference Service, Volume 2, Part 2: Reference Resources of Major Topic Areas

Anne Cerstvik Nolan and Marilyn P. Whitmore, Editors
Active Learning Series, no. 3

From the Editors

"This volume completes the three-part set entitled Instruction and Training for Enhanced Reference Service Using Hands-on Active Learning Techniques. Each chapter includes an introduction to the topic, lesson plans (many of them in great detail), suggestions for preparing and presenting the topical material, lists of selected reference resources (all include a mix of print and electronic), and hands-on exercises specifically developed for the instruction session.

"Hands-on exercises empower the trainee by providing immediate experience using both print and electronic resources to locate information. These are ready-made teaching materials to save the librarian many hours of preparation time. All of the lesson plans are equally valuable and easily adapted for library instruction sessions; they are not meant to be used only for reference training. They are appropriate for upper-level high school classes, for junior college, for undergraduate college and university, for faculty groups, as well as other client groups in a public library setting."

Reviews and Comments

This 3-part work "serves superbly as a reference-class-in-a-box for paraprofessional training.... Within each volume, entries are divided into three parts: background material on the nature of research on the topic, followed by a selective list of annotated major reference works, and finally exercises utilizing these works." - Public Services Quarterly v1 n1, 2002
