Instruction and Training for Enhanced Reference Service, Volume 2, Part 1: Reference Resources of the Disciplines
Anne Certsvik Nolan and Marilyn P. Whitmore, Editors
Active Learning Series, no. 3
From the Editors
"The need for extensive, on-going training in reference sources for both library staff and library users is well documented in the literature. The need to translate that training into hands-on learning continues to grow, but complete training is very time consuming, and is often forgotten as new demands are made on library staff. One approach for helping staff to cope with training needs is to break down training into workable components by type of reference resource, by discipline, and by frequently requested topics.
"The first volume in this three-volume set, Instruction and Training for Enhanced Reference Service Using Hands-on Active Learning Techniques, thoroughly covers categories of fact and finding reference resources as the first step in training or updating reference staff. ... This volume ... concentrates on Reference Resources in the Disciplines — Anthropology, Chemistry, Geology, Politics & Government, etc. It provides instruction and training lesson plans for the disciplines along with hands-on exercises."
Reviews and Comments
This 3-part work "serves superbly as a reference-class-in-a-box for paraprofessional training.... Within each volume, entries are divided into three parts: background material on the nature of research on the topic, followed by a selective list of annotated major reference works, and finally exercises utilizing these works." - Public Services Quarterly v1 n1, 2002
